About this ride
Sapa itself has been discovered. What is still quiet is everything north of it — the border road through Muong Hum to Y Ty, where the villages are Ha Nhi rather than Hmong and the cloud sits below the road most mornings.
This four-day loop uses Sapa as a gateway rather than a destination. Day one climbs O Quy Ho, the highest pass in Vietnam, and drops onto the border road. Day two runs the Red River frontier past the Lung Po flagpole. Days three and four bring you back through Bac Ha and Si Ma Cai, timed for the markets.
Around 450 kilometres in total, on roads that stay narrow, steep and almost empty the whole way.
Moderate. Narrow, steep and often wet mountain roads with sections of broken surface. Fine for confident riders; not a first-ever ride.

Before you book
- Do I need a permit for the border areas?
- The Y Ty, Lung Po and Si Ma Cai roads run inside the border zone. We arrange the paperwork before you arrive — just send us a photo of your passport when you book. Bring the physical passport with you on the ride.
- When can I actually see the sea of cloud at Y Ty?
- Most reliably from September to April, at sunrise, after a clear cold night. It is weather, so nobody can promise it — but staying overnight in Y Ty rather than day-tripping is what gives you the chance.
- Can this be combined with Ha Giang?
- Yes, and it is the most popular combination we run. Sapa to Ha Giang via Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi takes one riding day, making a 7- or 8-day trip. The 10-day Northern Grand Loop already includes both.
